GENTLEMEN’S DAY 3 MAY 2025

Our second competition of the season, Gentlemen’s Day, took place on 3rd May, with some 3 dozen members and friends attending.

There were 16 entrants, and they were divided into 4 leagues, with each player playing 3 matches. The most successful player in each league then went forward into the semi-finals, with the winner of league 1 playing the winner of league 3 and the winner of league 2 playing the winner of league 4.

Although the early morning had been quite bright and sunny, once play had commenced it became cool and dull – and remained that way for most of the competition.

Play started at 11am with the matches being played for 15 ends.

Once 4 rounds of matches had been played there was a break for lunch – with a splendid buffet being set out in the clubhouse for all to partake.

At about 1.45 play recommenced, with a further 2 rounds of matches being played, after which there was a further break for tea and cakes whilst the results were compiled.

The league winners were Paul Poynter, Bob Langley,  Rob Lees and Philip Eve; and the semi-finals (being played to 21, but with 6 on the cards) commenced around 3.30.

Unfortunately, Philip Eve had to withdraw from his semi-final when the score was 14:13.  Paul Poynter beat Rob Lees 21-17 after a spirited fightback by Rob (who had been trailing 12-20).

Fortunately, the weather improved for the final, which was played to 21 – with Paul the run away winner by 21-6.

The cup presentation was made by our President, Jean Walker.

ST GEORGE’S DAY COMPETITION 19 APRIL 2025

The first competition of the season took place on Saturday, with some 30 members attending.

The party started shortly before 11 with, in accordance with tradition, the loyal toast for St George (proposed once again by Ian Clark).

There were 20 players this year, divided into 2 divisions, with each team playing 4 matches of 9 ends.
Play moved along at a jolly pace because although it was mainly sunny and pleasant to view, it was really quite cold (although that did not stop our intrepid players!).

With breaks for refreshments and lunch, and we were able to keep up with the schedule and the final, played to 21, began about 3.20 between the winners of each league –
Sally McMahon and Ron Wilson & Marjorie Morgan and Ian Clark.
Unfortunately, most of this match was played in light rain ( as well as the cold).
Although Marjorie and Ian, took an early lead, they faltered halfway through and eventually lost 21 – 13.
The prize presentations were made by the Club President, Jean Walker.

On behalf of the Club we thank Carol (Club Captain) for her organising, and Bob Langley and everyone else who assisted with preparation, refreshments and cakes, washing up and clearing away at the end.

MIKE GRIPTON MEMORIAL – 20thJUNE 2026

It was a lovely day on Saturday when about 40 members and friends were in attendance throughout the day.

Shortly before 11am our Club Captain welcomed everyone and detailed what would be happening –
• The 28 entrants had been split into 3 leagues
• 2 leagues would play matches of 9 ends and 1 would play 12 ends (so everyone played 36 ends)
• Each team would play each of the other teams in their league
• 2 points would be awarded for a win and 1 for a draw
• Each league winner, together with the highest scoring losing team would play in the semi final
• The final would also be played over 12 ends

Play started promptly at 11
The standard of play was high and most ends were quite close with numerous measures.
There were some matches with big wins, but mostly the matches were close.

Refreshments were available throughout the day (mainly served by Jill Charles); a break for lunch (delayed); and cakes (of course) in the afternoon when the round robin matches were completed.

The semi-finalists were announced as Val Whittaker and Ian Clark (league 1); Daine Wooley and Chris Edwards (league 2); Angie Gilmour and Colin maxwell (league 3); with Carol Rodgers and Adam Gilmour joining as highest scoring losers.

The finalists were Val Whittaker and Ian Clark and Carol Rodgers and Adam Gilmour – with Val and Ian winning the close final.

This very enjoyable day ended around 5pm when, after saying a few words about Mike Gripton, Chris Gripton presented the prizes and trophy – and then the happy and weary members departed.

Thanks to Carol for her organisation, Jill, jane and Pauline in the kitchen, Ian with the raffle – and those many others who helped set up and put away.
